As we saw previously, it is not advisable to use LLMs on their own in the healthcare sector, as this is a regulated and sensitive sector, it is important to raise the requirements of the tools being used to ensure safety and trust. So how can the user experience be improved without compromising medical rigor?

Today’s digital triage systems have a clear purpose: to assist the patient in understanding their symptoms and guide them to the appropriate level of care.
Over the past few years, these tools have evolved by leaps and bounds, improving healthcare accessibility around the world. A positive point of these tools is their “white box” technology that allows the user to understand the reasoning that has gone into providing the pre-diagnosis, generating reliability when using it. On the other hand, it should be noted that one of their pillars is medical precision, which is why they are based on clinical engines designed by medical experts and validated in real contexts.
Until now, this patient-tool interaction has been functional but not always conversational. This is where the potential of LLMs comes in: to add a more natural conversational layer, while maintaining the validated clinical basis. It’s not about replacing anything, but about enhancing the experience of those interacting with the tool.

As we discussed earlier, it is not about replacing the healthcare professional or changing the technology of digital triage tools. Its role is to bring a more natural layer of communication between the user and the clinical system.
